In the corporate headquarters of readlarrypowell.com, we are blessed with two Tabby cats. Gray, black stripes and some highlights. Got the “M” on the foreheads….the whole works.
We’re focusing on them for this edition of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap.
What we hope to do is demonstrate a way the unskilled cat-eye can determine which Tabby is which. This involves a careful look at the nostrils.
These cats may be relatives. After all, they both showed up in the same Dallas neighborhood near Polk and Ledbetter. Esme arrived in 2012 — she particularly enjoyed the twice-daily group meal known as the Front Porch Feral Buffet.
In 2018, as I was painting the wood-trim on the brick house, William, a youngish fellow, walked up, applied for a job helping me — mostly via observation — and, then, took a permanent position as Office Cat William Powell.
If a room is only slightly dark, you may not be able to tell Esme from William.
But, if you have a cellphone flashlight, you’ll be able to tell that William is the Tabby with the dynamically pink nose. Esme has a more sedate dark nose with only slightly pinkish coloring around her nostrils.
This photo is of Esme as she plots her leap from the floor into my lap in the living room chair we share.
I’ve also included a video of younger cat William Powell grooming while in my lap in the living room chair we three share.
What does that video show? It displays a cat’s sincerity toward grooming. And, at the end, you get to see the glare a cat can aim at you when Celebrity Cat William Powell realizes the paparazzi is filming his most personal moments. It’s an icy stare.

Yeah, I have NONE OF THE SKILLS REQUIRED to convert that "still photo" into the moving picture you'll see when you click on THE LINK. Junior college dropout, you know -- I pay attention to cats and dogs instead of profitable knowledge. Why do you think I'm an insomniac?
[DEAR READERS: Please send photos and bios of the slumbering animals you love to us at [email protected]. You’ll be inspiring other people to make room in their homes and hearts for dogs and cats and other critters that enjoy a good nap. And you’ll be helping insomniacs understand that they, too, can get some sleep if they can just figure out how to glare away interruptions and distractions. Takes practice.
