EDITION OF MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2023 [PetPowellPress] Can this be the first Monday in June 2023? Yes, it can be. What is our mission? Type swiftly, type accurately, type dogs and cats into the loving hearts of good people.
If you know someone with a good heart who doesn’t have a critter in the house or has room for one or two more, give ‘em a nudge and tell ‘em where to find a loving feline, canine or any other ‘ine” companion. Porcine. Bovine. Equine. Chickine. Wait. That last one may not be authentic. I feel like a Gooseine for using Chickine. That Rabbit? Wally the Wabbit, #51968586, a Californian Mix, just over a year old, who weighs in at 4 Hareine pounds at the SPCA of Texas. I'm ashamed of having tried to get away with using "Hareine. Wally's bio and how to make him hoppily, happily yours are is at spca.org.
We have Contemplations today, too. That's where we’ll also explain a July 4, 2015, photograph provided by our Eastern Seaboard Bureau on Indian Lake in Denville, N.J. You’ll learn about a fellow named Charlie and a community on a lake in New Jersey.
THIS LITTLE PUPPY HAS
A REPUTATION FOR FUN
We got the info on this adorable adoptable from our pal Maeleska Fletes, veteran animal advocate and rescuer who’s on the board of the pup’s benefactor, DFW’s Furgotten Friends.
“On the board” can be defined as “fostering,” “transporting,” “adoring”— lots of responsibilities and challenges.
In a facebook post, Maeleska wrote, “This fellow is at my house. He’s so fun!!”
Jeffery (his preferred spelling, “is a 10-week-old pup who weighs 6.5 pounds. He is the sweetest little boy! We are not sure what his mix is or how big he will be but we don’t think he will be a large pup. Fill out our application to meet him!” Here’s the ADOPTION LINK.

AN UPDATE ON ‘ANGIE DOG,’
A RESCUE IN A NEW HOME
In brief, way back in early May we posted a story about this Shepherd stray in Dallas who’d been rescued off the streets by the renowned Angie Manriquez, inspiration for the rescue organization Angie’s Friends.
Yes, Angie lives up to her legendary status in the animals world.
Our tipster Gabriela Pataro send a weekend note that outlines a happy update for Angie Dog.
She wrote, “After much concern and heartache for this little girl, who was in such bad condition, Angie Dog has a wonderful forever home!
“It all began with an inquiry about a puppy, and the conversation led to the fact the family had lost their Shepherd after 12 years. When I mentioned that I had a Shepherd female, the interest peaked and we met right away.
“Angie went to her forever home the following week and she has a small dog (Pip) as a brother in addition to two teenaged humans, a mom and a good amount of extended family.
Angie now goes with the family anywhere they go and she is enjoying a fabulous life.
“Since she was a DAS (Dallas Animal Services) dog, they will be arranging for her fast-kill heartworm treatment in the next few weeks. We are amazed at how quickly and perfectly everything fell together🐾
“Angie Dog has an angel looking over her.”

CONTEMPLATIONS
CHARLIE, THE UNCLE SAM ON SKIS
We’ve posted these photos before — they were taken by the Editor-in-Chief of our Eastern Seaboard Bureau, Andy Fisher, on Indian Lake in Denville, N.J. Andy is a veteran print and broadcast journalist and, with guidance by his Pickleball-winning spouse Annie, has evolved into a devoted “animal nut” currently the authorized house-servant of the cat Chloe.
For this edition, Andy provided an update from Indian Lake and it may just make all of us think about the people of value in our own neighbrhoods whether we live on the banks of a lake or deep in the heart of a dry stretch of Texas. That's Charlie Weldon on skis at the 2015 Fourth of July celebration on Indian Lake. Charlie was in his 80s.
Andy wrote, “Our Indian Lake community lost a giant this week … There was pretty much nothing Charlie Weldon didn't do for Indian Lake, from serving on the board of trustees to being a water-skiing Uncle Sam every Fourth of July through 2018, when he was 83 years old.” These photos of Charlie on skies are from 2015, taken by Andy from his lakeside yard.
Recalling a winter challenge, Andy wrote, “Annie and I met Charlie and his lovely wife Terry over dinner at That's Amore (Charlie had good taste, too). Shortly after that, a winter storm brought down a huge branch from our late lamented maple tree, and most of it fell into the lake. There was nothing we could do until spring, and then I got a note from the lake club demanding that the branch be pulled out of the lake because it was a hazard to navigation. … Charlie, the 83-year-old water-skiing Uncle Sam, came over and, with the help of Kenny DePugh (a volunteer at Eleventh Hour Animal Rescue), we pulled the branch out of the lake.
"It was not an isolated offer of help. Charlie was always there when he was needed.” Andy then cites a report by “a master journalist in our community, Dan Sforza, the executive editor of the Record Newspapers of Northern New Jersey. I have attached his lovely account of Charlie's life.” Here is a LINK to Journalist Sforza’s tender recollections of Charlie, a man dedicated to the lake and its people.
You may know people with the same Charlie Attitude — you may be one of ‘em. As the saying goes, “We’re all in this together.”
