EDITION OF TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY SEPT. 19-20, 2023 [PetPowellPress] FYI: I’ll be away from the keyboard for a few hours. I’m trying out as a relief pitcher for the Texas Rangers. I’m kidding — if I had to jog from the bullpen to the mound, they’d have to bring out the medics and an oxygen tank before I could throw a pitch. We’re still rooting for the Rangers. That’s Porche practicing her “Let me have a word with the ump-face.”
If you’re on the internet sites for animals in despair, you can get pretty weary of the don’t care/so what humans. Their irresponsible actions put wonderful dogs on Death Row throughout the State of Texas and beyond.
That’s the state of mind I was in when I found the notices of these next two dogs on line. Both dogs gave me hope that hearts would unite to save them from despair. Read on, please.
MOUNT PLEASANT HAS
ULTRA-CUTE MRS. PIGGY
[LARRY ASIDE: As soon as I saw this photo I showed it to my funspouse Martha, a veteran rescuer and adoptor, and she said, “Let’s go get her.” We do have some sense, however, and we can count the animals we already have, so. rather than make a high-speed drive to one of the sweetest towns in Northeast Texas, I decided to post this photo and this story. And I must give give credit to veteran animal fan Darcelle Cowles for posting it where I’d see it!] So here’s the info:
We have access to only one photo of Mrs. Piggy. But it’s a darned cute one. She’s described as a mixed breed, 3-years-old, 27.9 pounds.
She’s A54178976 at the Mount Pleasant Animal Shelter. According to the posting on Facebook, she’ll become “Available for Adoption on Sept. 20 — that’s Wednesday at 3:38 p.m. And at 3:38 p.m. on the 21st (Thursday), she’ll become “Available For Rescue.”
The Facebook link to the Mount Pleasant shelter is HERE.
The shelter website link is HERE.
And you folks with hearts as soft as Martha’s should know that this dog is not the only ultra cute animal available in the Mount Pleasant Animal Services Shelter.
Where is Mount Pleasant? Depends on where YOU are. If you’re in the Metrosprawl, get on I-30 and drive northeasterly for about 2 hours. If you’re in Texarkana in the corner of the Greater NortheastTextroplex, get on I-30 drive westward about 90 minutes and there you’ll be. Lots of available adorables at that shelter.
NOW, HERE’S A FELLOW
WAITING IN DALLAS…
Just as my rescuespouse Martha and I reacted immediately to the sight of the aforementioned Mrs. Piggy of Mount Pleasant, I fell immediately for this guy who’s being monitored by Dallas Urgent Shelter Dogs and other folks, too, I’m hoping to high heaven!
This is the mugshot of Randy. The next photo is his neck...
Personal note: One of the greatest dogs I ever lived with (for years!) was a rescued Rottie named Texas Earl the Cheeseman. Based on Earl’s kind and loving behavior and his adoration for his humans, I’m going to go ahead and endorse this guy as the right dog for someone who has the ability to love him more than he loves you. [LARRY EXPLANATION: That is one big honkin’ challenge, isn’t it. Outlove a dog? Can it really happen? We humans are so arrogant! But that’s how much Earl, the calm and kind Rottweiler, inspired me and continues to inspire me.]
This guy Randy’s tale was shared on Dallas Urgent Shelter Dogs Facebook site by Florence M. DiGennarro.
Here’s how the story of Randy (#A1190093) goes. He’s available as of today. Randy is 2, weighs 87 pounds and is heartworm negative.
The bio reads, “Randy was brought to our shelter as a stray with an injury to his neck. He is currently in our injured room for regular checks and treatment. Randy is looking for a rescue or foster until he is fully healed from his injuries.
“Medical : Pt was shaking head and would not allow to be examined. Pt was sedated and neck was clipped/cleaned. Wounds on both sides of neck consistent with a previous prong collar. DVM approved to administer pain meds and antibiotics given SQ.
“Behavior: Very sweet boy. Well mannered, knows sit, and leash trained.”

CONTEMPLATIONS
COLLARS AND OTHER NOTES
Back to this boy Randy at DAS. The phrasing: “Wounds on both sides of neck consistent with a previous prong collar.” In the world of readlarrypowell.com, only some mean jerk would put a pain-causing collar on any animal. Especially a dog. You control a dog with your heart, not your meanness. …
Is there a way to cheer the Texas Rangers into a World Series? I can’t look at the standings without thinking about all the years of Rangers fandome I’ve visited on my sons, the lifetime Rangers fans Bret and Bart. I think they saw their first game — from the cheap seats at Arlington Stadium — when they were about 2. That’s a lifetime of “Wait ’til next year? Not again!”
What’s the link between Mount Pleasant and sweetness in the Metroplex? Mount Pleasant is now the home of the glorious chocolates company Sweet Shop USA, founded in Fort Worth and formerly located just north of the city’s Montgomery Plaza. In March of 2000, an afternoon rush-hour tornado beat up the whole neighborhood. Later, Sweet Shop USA, regarded as “the largest handmade chocolate manufacturer in the country,” re-located to Mount Pleasant. I’ve been there — I walked into that chocolate factor in awe and with glee and celebrated with joy some of the magnificent chocolate truffles. If you are as nuts about great chocolates as I am, you set your car’s automatic pilot on that site. Fortunately, you can order these hand-crafted delighs online at sweetshopusa.com.
Ah, to sleep, perchance to dream of chocolate truffles and the 32-inch waist I once had before I discovered extra cheesy nachos during a night shift dinner break at a local newspaper in downtown Dallas. Ah, journalism, the pounds you put on people!
