EDITION OF TUESDAY, FEB. 27, 2023 [PetPowellPress] We’ve had really pretty moons the past few nights. Then, suddenly, as February wanes, summer shows up like it owns the place.
And, FYI, the efforts to help Mooney the Frenchie cope with medical challenges continue. His foster/advocate Kimberly Jones has a Monday report on the gofundme page here: https://gofund.me/3d5d6785.
That is Mooney, possibly among the cutest little guys in the known universe of rescued pups, Mooney is waiting for some more medical treatment. You can learn about it on that gofundme page..
‘SOME JERK’ DUMPS
PUPS IN WILLS POINT
Wills Point is a little more than an hour east of Dallas if you take U.S. 80 in that direction. It’s nudging the 4,000 population mark and either they have one certifiable jerk or some jerk drove from the Metrosprawl to dump a litter of pups. [LARRY ASIDE: Coulda come from somewhere else, I guess. Not that, now and then, you don't think each of the 254 Texas counties has been issued more than its fair share of chowderheaded heartless ratbrains — no offense to Texas rats.]
We got the heads-up on this incident from our longtime reliable tipster Sydney Busch, guiding light and co-founder of Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake.
These are the “puppies.” Looking a little older than “puppies,” but they’re still youngsters.
The note Sydney got on Sunday from Traci Peterson reads, “Two days ago, some jerk dumped 4 mixed-breed puppies near our house. They appear to be a Lab mix and are very sweet, but a little skittish right now. We don’t have the money to get vet care/food for them. We have no problem fostering them and working with them if you could help out and find them homes. …There are 2 boys and 2 girls.”
To offer to help these puppies, email [email protected] or [email protected].
[LARRY ASIDE: Seriously, does a litter of big dogs dumped in a largely rural county have a better chance of survival than a litter of big dogs dumped in a major metropolitan area’s overloaded animal shelters? Something to consider, I guess — if you’re prone to caring about animals. Otherwise just drive ‘em to a road near a pasture and roll ‘em out onto the asphalt or the gravel and drive away. Jerk.]UPDATING FROM MESQUITE;
1 RESCUED; 1 ADOPTED;
2 ARE AMONG THE WAITING
Our reliable volunteer dog-writing tipster Debra Chisholm of Mesquite Animal Services has some news for us.
“Happy to report,” she begins, “that precious senior Alfie(left), who was probably hit by a car, has been rescued and Penny [the Border Collie mix] has been adopted.
The other two Mesquite pups we mentioned in our Feb. 26 edition, Apollo (left) the 2-year-old Siberian Husky [#55190995] and Harmony [#55396212], the Black Mouth Cur/Boxer Mix) are :”still at the shelter.”
[CITE THEIR ID NUMBERS when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].]
And Debra adds, “Hoping they will soon find their forever homes, too.
"Thank you for giving Mesquite Shelter dogs space in your publication. It is much appreciated.” [LARRY ASIDE: Readlarrypowell.com is proud to give these shelter pups some needed spotlight — after all, these shelter volunteers and staffers have been working so hard to save their lives via rescue and adoption. The shelter takes positive steps with its animals to make sure they’re healthy as can be and a good fit for a family or person who is going to give ‘em that “forever home”.]
MEANWHILE, IN THE SHELTERS
OPERATING IN SMALL TOWNS
We may have posted this girl Bailey before (recently, perhaps—I’m lost in space now and thend). She arrived in the inbox from the 4-Legged Helpers. But when we first posted her, we didn’t have access to this photo and if there ever was a picture that said, “This dog looks like she belongs in a loving human’s home,” it is this photograph.
The Helpers say, “Bailey knows obedience and several commands. Even trained her to open a sliding dog (quite interesting - shows how incredibly smart this dog is). House-trained, kennel- trained. Doggy door trained too. She is absolutely adorable. Great with kids. Great with all other dogs. Really sweet. Such an adorable girl. The person that found her travels on her job and is going through a divorce so ... we helped find a temp foster but Bailey needs a rescue or forever home." And the 4LHelpers report, “A very kind person rescued her and has done a wonderful job training her."
To ask about adopting Bailey, a mature Anatolian Shepherd mix found straying in Waxahachie, call or text 214-949-2726 or 972-897-4926 or email [email protected].
And, as we noted in an earlier post, Cruise (AKA Maverick) is in the Ferris/Hutchins Shelter and his bio describes him as “honestly the sweetest most wonderful dog that adores all people, all other dogs; he is cute as can be. Loves to play….”
And there’s Bren, the Fort Worth stray that caught the 4-Legged Helpers eye. She’s “super cute” and already fixed, house-trained and crate-trained. Just needs someone to love,” the Helpers’ bio reads.
And there’s still Joey, currently being fostered by someone who plucked him from a shelter. As you can tell from the photo, Joey, the Maile Boxer mix, likes being adored.
Again, to ask about any of the animals on the 4-Legged Helpers’ radar,
call or text 214-949-2726 or 972-897-4926 or email [email protected].
CONTEMPLATIONS
ASSORTED NOTES IN THE UNIVERSE
The Major League All-Star game is scheduled for July 16 at the Texas Rangers’ field in Arlington, but wouldn’t it be kind of fun to have it re-scheduled for about 1 p.m. on April 8 with the roof open? Be hard to hit a curve ball in those ecliptic conditions. …
ONE MORE ATHLETIC NOTE: This was posted on neighborhood bulletin board site by a fellow from Arlington Heights in Fort Worth. Remember, the famed Cowtown Marathon was on Sunday. The posting read, “I watched today (Sunday) as a fast moving wolf pack of tow truck drivers removed over a dozen cars parked at CVS (Montgomery and Camp Bowie) while drivers participated in the Cowtown Marathon. Sure it's marked no parking but you'd think someone from CVS or the race would be out there to shoo drivers away. Oh yeah, the cost from the tow ferry runs about $400. One young woman in tears told me she had no way to work or school for her kids this week as she couldn't pay that.” [LARRY ASIDE: Seems like that parking situation could have been worked out in advance, doesn’t it.]
SOME MAY SEE THAT NOTE AS A WORD OF CAUTION ABOUT PARKING for a marathon. Not me. I see it as one more good reason not to try to run a marathon! I hold to that vow. If I’m ever seen running 26 miles it’s because I’m chasing a tow truck that’s trying to haul my 1999 Ford 150 to the Museum of 20th Century Emotions in Heartbeat, Texas — that’s in Romance County. I”ll need to check my facts, of course.
