EDITION OF MONDAY/TUESDAY AUGUST 12-13, 2024 [PetPowellPress] Ah. It’s a whole new world this time of the week, isn’t it! Not just talking about school starting. Oh, my. OK, we’ll move on into the animal world where humans are the protecting angels.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE
THIS FAB FELLOW!
Yes, this is the heroic, tough, adorable little Frenchie, the famed Mooney, the little dog saved by veteran rescuer and animal advocate Kimberly Williams.
He was listed on a neighborhood bulletin board as available and Kimberly grabbed him to save his life. He was sick in several ways — parvo, for one, and as it turns out, hydrocephalus that would require some surgeries. Lots of people saw the gofundme that Kimberly set up for Mooney and they joined “The Mooney Movement” to help.
All of that plays into the weekend’s “continuing adventures” of Mooney.
You see the photo of the little rascal staring at a serving of food. (Read on about that!)
On Friday afternoon, Kimberly reported that Mooney, post-surgery, “He has quite a few medications to start tonight. He's sleeping now..” [LARRY ASIDE: That second smiling photo cracked me up--Mooney looks so geared up for a meal that he's just nearly about to break out in a smile!]
Kimberly, by the way, wrote especially to Mooney’s supporters, “Thank you so much to everyone who donated and shared!!! Thank you to barkleyworld.com for helping with this bill as well! I wasn't expecting the extras that happened today... You all are AMAZING!!! Mooney is so loved!!! I appreciate you all!!!”
ON SATURDAY, Mooney was a little bit shaky, so Kimberley took him back to the vet. She says, “He got a Cerenia injection, an antibiotic injection and a pain injection. The Cerenia helps with nausea (so hopefully he will eat now)... He is laying down now feeling better (thank you pain killer!!!”
ON SUNDAY, Mooney made another “just-to-make-sure” visit to the vet’s and got some more “injections” to help him cope with changes and improvements.
ON MONDAY, Kimberley sent these photos and reported, “I just got him to eat some of the softened dry food (in the photo) AND a little bit of canned food. I got 1 pain killer in him too. 🙏🏼”

And you can also get in touch with Karen Lee at barkleyworld.com to see how you can help that non-profit and Mooney, too. /Barkleyworld.com focuses on helping animals and the people who love them -- people who might be in tough financial spots and need some help navigating the challenges.
A DOG ALONGSIDE I-40
& THE OKLAHOMA ANGEL…
[LARRY NOTE: Read larrypowell.com has never before referred to Terry Lynn Fisher as “The Oklahoma Angel” but this might be a good time to start. She’s got another “impossible situation” on her dog-saving radar.]
Terry Lynn Fisher, our longtime western Oklahoma contact in Burns Flat, sent this photo and the story. [You may recall her recent attempts to help a whole litter of big dogs dumped in that area about 20 miles north of Burns Flat.]
Her latest note reads, “Yet ANOTHER dog up on I-40….this one appears to be an older Chihuahua mix.
“People have tried to catch with no luck so I’m getting ready to go set a trap
“If I catch it, I need help with it. I need a foster until I can find a rescue to take. Y’all, I seriously have no room whatsoever. All my kennels are full and I have dogs at my home .
“I CANNOT DO THIS ON MY OWN!!!!! I NEED HELP!!!!
“If you can foster if caught, please let me know. There is not even a reason for me to try to trap without a safe place to go if caught.”
Volunteer to rescue or adopt or to help in some other way by emailing Terry Lynn at [email protected].
THERE’S THIS DOG
HEIDI — GETTING BETTER
We got the tip of Heidi’s latest report from our longtime pal, the animal advocate and rescuer Beverly Fyfe. The story has to do with a dog featured on the Dallas Dog — Rescue. Rehab. Reform Facebook page HERE.
The email came with that photo of the dog and the Happy Monday sign. And we scrolled through the DD-RRR listings until we found some “before” photos from nearly two months ago.
The text that came with the Happy Monday picture indicates how much happier things are now for Heidi.
It reads,
“Severely abused by the homeless man that owned her - rescued as he was trying to bury her alive. Heidi was so debilitated that she could not even walk. Weeks later - her little paws are still wrapped to protect the puncture holes in them.
"A lot of vet care and much love later - she is on her way to good health and the good life they each deserve.
"All because of animal advocates.
"God bless the animals and God bless those that help them - and may the devil take the evildoers.”
Again, here’s that link to the Dallas Dog Rescue. Rehab. Reform page on Facebook.
[LARRY ASIDE: We have no link to the guy who was trying to bury this dog alive. But the situation does inspire us to longingly think of re-activating the oh-so-sincere application of our of our Readlarrypowelldotcom Two-by-Four of Enlightenment. But, of course, that would be wrong. It might feel good to the well-intentioned wanting to beat the devil out of somebody, but it would be wrong. So, just make sure the dogs and cats are safe and the humans have an opportunity to wise-up.]
CONTEMPLATIONS
AN ASSORTMENT & SCHOOLS, TOO
How can the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics top the closing of Paris 2024 Summer Games with that (a) Star-Spangled Banner performance by H.E.R. (breath-taking) and that (b) Oh-so-Hollywood appearance by actor Tom Cruise dropping out of the sky, getting the Olympic Flag and jumping onto a motorcycle with it to start it on it’s trip to Los Angeles. …
OK, so maybe the LA Olympic Committee could stage all the Olympic yachting, rowing, skiing and swimming events in the Los Angeles River —- you, know if California gets any rain between now and 2028. Of course, the LA River might be a little bit less un-polluted than the Seine. …
How about that FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL for lots of kids. It’s strange to me. (I’m not sure my kids started school in August — might have been their way of protesting a pre-September star. I followed the rules. I went to public school for all 12 years and never once started the school year before September on the day after Labor Day. And look how great I turned out — wait, I’m kidding. Don’t look! [LARRY ASIDE: My Senior Office Cat William Powell assures me that Junior Office Cat William Powell has “shredded” my academic records. I’m kidding. My cats believe in protecting the records. That’s how we discovered I’d accidentally earned a Masters Degree in Factual Misrepresentation. (I’m kidding, but I’m bettering there’s a school somewhere that offers that degree — you know, for people interested in political careers.]
