EDITION OF FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 2024 [PetPowellPress] Welcome to Friday and let’s see what we’ve got — maybe something that’ll make you smile because humans did something good for animals.
I’ve been out of school for quite some time, but the arrival of August always makes me sweat the chances that I’ll fail Latin I and Latin II and never get to be regarded as literate. And, yep, here I am. Writing about dogs and cats and only now and then introducing a Latin phrase to the passage, i.e., “Six friat crustulum.” (Translation available for $25.)…
AH, AND THEN ENZO
MAKE A KEY MOVE….
We got this uplifting note from our pal Karen Lee of Barkleyworld.com, the non-profit that helps people help animals with health problems. You may recall the recent challenge of saving this guy Enzo who’d moved onto the “Euthanize Parade List” at Dallas Animal Services and Adoption.
Karen’s latest note reads, “Hey Everyone, Great News!! Enzo is OFF the EU list as he has a committed foster!! He will complete his HW treatment and be neutered and we hope he finds a forever home.
“He also has a back-up in Katrina, who originally took him out for breaks from the shelter. She and her husband had a heart to heart and came to the conclusion that they could not let Enzo die. They were prepared to foster and to take every precaution to protect their cats.
“They were in the process of getting their home ‘Enzo Ready’ when they found out someone else stepped up to foster. So Enzo has a back-up plan too. I don’t have any more details but that Enzo is marked “SAFE”….and I will follow his progress as much as I can”
Karen, veteran of many rescues and of helping many animals find safety at barkleyworld.com, added this expression of gratitude. Karen wrote, “Thank you to ALL who cared, shared and prayed for Enzo. There are so many more dogs and cats in this same situation in shelters ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. So please don’t lose your enthusiasm to help them all. Every life matters!!!”
SHAWN AND SUZIE —
SURELY SOMEONE
CAN HELP THE DOGS
Indeed they need help and these two dogs would absolutely respond happily to the human who gives them that happy, reliable home.
We’ve written about them before — for months — they are siblings whose case is under the watchful eye of our pal Laura Macias, a veteran rescuer who has been making connections on behalf of animals for years.
These two dogs — Shawn and Suzie — surely need a place that offers a traditional home to be loved and adored. Currently, they’re living at a gun range on the southern side of Dallas.
Laura is trying to find a more traditional home for them so they can get some quietly personal attention.
These two were dumped in a traditional dumping area East of Ferris.
Laura says that these pups are “very well behaved. Even enjoy riding on the golf cart, LOL. .Both are young dogs and incredibly sweet. Very loving. Available individually or together.”
And to help these dogs, call or txt 21r-949-2726 or email [email protected]. And if you’re a rescue group wanting to help this pair, contact Laura — transportation may be available for Shawn and Suzie.
MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE?
SHE IS A ‘GREAT’ DOG
Yep, actually, literally — a GREAT Pyrenees. We got the story of Bianca from Judi Brown, our longtime tipster and dog biographer at Mesquite Animal Services.
Bianca is #56433166, Judi says the year-old, 52-pound “Sweetheart” came into the shelter as a stray on July 25. [LARRY ASIDE: Bianca has a great face, a great coat, a big dog tongue and fluffy tail — combine that with her personality and she’s a perfect adorable adoptable.]
Judi says, “When I first met her, she couldn’t stop wiggling she was so happy. She appeared to be smiling, and you can see that in her photos. She stayed close and her tail never stopped wagging. She’s very sweet and affectionate.
“A toddler came into the yard, and Bianca kissed the little girl. She did gently jump on her which Bianca would need
to learn not to do…. but you could tell she was trying to be gentle. She doesn’t appear to know the sit command, but that’s something you could teach her. She comes when she’s called. She’s calm and so so sweet. z
"She would make a great snuggle bug laying next to you on the couch. It’s too hot for a dog with as much fur as she has to be out for very long in the Texas heat.”
Remember, cite Bianca’s ID #56433166 when you email [email protected] or call the settler at 972-216-6283.
Looking for a kitten (or maybe a grown-up cat? Here are some kittens.
Remember, you can look online for a dog or a cat or a puppy or a kitten or a way to get involved in helping the hard-working staffers and volunteers at Mesquite’s Animal Shelter save ‘em all. THAT ANIMALS IN THE SHELTER LINK IS HERE.
CONTEMPLATIONS
A FRIDAY ARRIVES IN AUGUST
OK, here’s the deal with “Sic friat crustulum.” Our Latin teacher at Texas High in Texarkana, the very tough Mrs. R.C. Hamilton, taught us that “Sic friat crustulum” translates into Northeast Texas English as “That’s the way the cookie crumbles.” You know that Latin phrase, the commonly used “Tempus fugit?” In my 3 years at Texas High, algebra, basic science and Latin classes demonstrated to me that tempis couldn’t fugit fast enough in those days. Yep, I graduated. My parents bought me a Corvette — I’m kidding. They gave me a hand-held, battery-powered recorder so I could do interviews without having to read my handwriting after the session. I was already a cub reporter at The Texarkana Gazette. Yep, my handwriting looks like code from a civilization that has yet to invent an alphabet. I often need my literatefunspouse Martha’s help in reading notes I’ve made for myself.
NOTE TO SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 2024; Put on a smile and go on back to high school — it can’t possibly be as challenging as it was in 1966 when people thought Baby Boomers would be able to live up to the expectations of their Depression-Era and World War II-era parents. Honest. I swear..
LEARN STUFF. Knowledge is important. That’s what I heard.
