EDITION OF FRIDAY, AUG. 9, 2024 [PetPowellPress] Welcome, Dear Readers and visitors to a Friday edition of readlarrypowell.com, a dog/ cat/&/people publication since early in this century.
I am the representative for the day. You may recognize me. I am Senior Office Cat William Powell.
It is my pleasure today to reveal that our publication's namesake is taking Friday off. I asked why and he replied, "I can't explain it in polite terms." He rarely takes a day off. Never travels. Constantly diets. "Simple madness," is my diagnosis.
He and I are native Texans. Therefore we are culturally licensed to gripe about the heat, the constant racket of politics and the lousy odds that the Texas Rangers will get back to the World Series for 2024. He gripes a lot more than a cat.
Lately I've heard him muttering to the dogs about his inability to sleep with so much heat. [WILLIAM ASIDE: “Muttering” is the proper term for the act of speaking to dogs, according to my Handbook of Acceptable Feline Behavior. I prefer the purr.]
Confidentially: Those of us who spend the most time with this knucklehead took a yes/no vote on his plan to take Friday off. The dogs were unanimous. Two cats called their lawyers. Two more curled up on their favorite couch and nodded off under signs they'd made that read: "ASSOCIATION OF CATS: SUPPORTING RATIONAL BEHAVIOR IN HUMANS."
We'll see him over the weekend, perhaps in the next edition of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap. Possibly the title will be extended to read Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, Napping Cat Nap and Snoozers Snooze.” He’s no snoozer: Insomnia is a 24-hour curse -- my feline colleagues and I work in shifts to make sure he doesn't get out of bed and wander off.
FYI, the folks at the online calendar Holiday Insights report that August 9 is Smokey Bear Day, National Kool-Aid Day and
Book Lover's Day. We've been told that The Big Typo, er, The Big Typist at readlarrypowell.com, loves Smokey, hasn't had Kool-Aid in decades and hasn't finished a book without falling asleep since he started writing a novel called "The Year Dallas Tamed The Freeways." It's science fiction.
Thank you for reading. The first two photos are me, Senior Office Cat William Powell and the other is a photo of me with my protege, Junior Office Cat Stevie Ray Treeboy -- we think the boss slipped out into the front yard to do a rain chant he'd written. Fortunately he was still in his pajamas this time.
Keep visiting readlarrypowell.com and save 'em all,
