EDITION OF MONDAY/TUESDAY (OCT. 7-8, 2024 [PetPowellPress] Ah, what an experience. Air-conditioning system crashed late Friday afternoon. Joyously typing this in front of a fan. It's like being in my childhood home in the 1950s. No color TV, no A/C, plenty of laughter. Now, on this occasion in the 21st century, we may not have air-conditioning, but we do have cable TV. In those days I learned not to ask for much -- early instruction about household budgeting!!
That's our driveway lizard, Lennie Tailman. I asked him if he wanted to come in and watch some football on warmish Sunday afternoon and he replied, "Are you kidding? I may be a sidewalk-lounging-lizard, but I believe in the ol' Lizard Rule of Life: Stay cool."
CONTINUING FOR
THE WHOLE MONTH....
FYI: As you probably know, October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. This particular month
for Shelter Dogs has been on the calendars since 1981. And, as you probably know, Dear Readers, no shelter ever runs out of inventory. Especially not in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Here's the Dallas Animal Services LINK https://bedallas90.org. When you get there, you have to do some sincere navigating to see what's what in Big D's shelter. By chance I saw this girl Jenny on the Dallas Animal Services pages of adoptables. She's a year old, weighs 47 pounds and when you contact the shelter ask about Jenny and use her ID # A1227098.
MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE
MORE AUTUMN ADOPTABLES
As we've explained before, readlarrypowell.com sometimes needs to edit animal bios for space reasons. These bios from our sources -- volunteer dog biographers at Mesquite Animal Services -- can be seen in full on the city's animal shelter site HERE.
We're using the photos and spotlighted bios as helpful suggestions for people who can give wonderful dogs (and cats) great homes.
Check out the ears on this guy Dakota -- his shelter ID # is 56053503. We learned about him courtesy of Mesquite volunteer dog-bio-writer Jamie Dotson.
Dakota is a 3-year-old, neutered Australian Kelpie mix -- weighs in at 60 pounds. Came in as a stray on June 3. And Jamie writes, "You take one look at Dakota and the first word is Wow! He is stunning with crystal blue eyes, accented by his ears and fluffy soft coat. He is also one smart pup ... He loves to do zoomies in the yard and will chase balls but not return them." Cite Dakota's ID # 56053503 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].
Jamie also tipped us to the presence of Liza, a 3-year-old female Beauceron/ Lab Retriever mix who weighs 53 pounds. She came into Mesquite's Shelter on 7/23 as a stray. Jamie wrote, 'This lovely girl is a beauty! She has a gentle soul, and she shows it with how she takes treats, walks well on a leash, and enjoys being petted and having her ears scratched. She was so excited to go for a walk and run through the yard, she did jump a bit, but listened when I redirected her. She loved fluffy dog beds the moment she saw one." Lisa is #56418867 at the shetler.
Remember, THIS SHELTER LINK will show you not only Shelter Dogs, but Shelter Cats, too.
[LARRY ASIDE: Autumn is a good time to adopt cats, too. Oh, heck, autumn is a good time to adopt any critter in a shelter! They all need a loving human heart in a loving human home.]
CONTEMPLATIONS
IN SUPPORT OF A GOOD WALK
This note may give you something to think about, Dear Readers.
We'll start with the "Walk." Nico Van Thyn, a guy I've known since the 1960s -- we both worked in The Shreveport Times Sports Department -- and he built a really great career as sportswriter, executive sports editor and columnist not only in Shreveport but at The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Nico is still involved in competitive events. This is a chance to join Nico's team.
He is "fundraising to honor all those facing Alzheimer's,"the opening page of his appeal reads. Yes, like so many other people, this is personal! A personal effort with a history of personal exposure to the challenge.
Click HERE to see Nico's appeal.
He opened this way: "Alzheimer’s isn’t stopping and neither are we. By participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, I’m raising awareness and funds to advance the fight against this disease — funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research."
Nico's goal for the walk is to raise $7,500. As of Sunday evening, he's raised $7,331.
You can "join Nico's team," the Trinity Trotters, as they move toward the 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer's in Fort Worth on Saturday, Oct. 19. Click on THIS LINK.
Nico's page explains, "Families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia need us — and with your help, we can be there for them. Please make a donation or register as a participant and start your own fundraising efforts. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s disease."
[LARRY NOTE: There you have it: Definite proof that sportswriters have heart. Some of the biggest hearts you'll find. Nico stayed in sports; I moved to the news side to write features and columns and be an editor -- the jury is still out on whether me and my ol' colleagues had a heart! I hope you smiled at that wisecrack. Larry.]
