EDITION OF OCT. 28-29, 2024 [PetPowellPress] This is being typed in my home office on the sunny morning of Monday, Oct. 28, and I'm the only mammal awake in the house -- except for Porche Noel who just walked down the hall to the kitchen to re-load for her afternoon visit to the yard.
That's Porche flopped down on the floor right in the entry from the hallway to the office. And that is, I think, her "Why are you bothering me?" look. She's too darlin' not to bother.
My Monday mailbox is loaded with all sort of messages -- many have nothing to do with animals but one of the subject lines reads "larry powell has a private mess..." No kidding. So I clicked and it opens to say "larry powell has a private message," Turns out I had neither mess nor message. So I hugged Porche and went on with my day.
ELECTION DAY IS COMING:
MANY DOGS AND CATS NEED
A POSITIVE VOTE FROM HUMANS
I decided this Monday morning to click onto the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center website and navigate to adoptable animals. As you can see from this chain of photos below, I landed on cats and kittens.
Probably, if you're reading this, you already have a cat or cats and your heart breaks a little bit when you see cats and kittens waiting in a city shelter that keeps a supply of needles and ..well, you know.
But, maybe you know someone who has a place for another cat or kitten or another dog. Click on this link bedallas90.org to look at Dallas cats and dogs and see if there's one you or a friend or a family member can work into the household population.
MEANWHILE, IN MESQUITE,
ADORABLE ADOPTABLES AWAIT...
We've been tipped to these animals and many others by the volunteers who get to know Mesquite Animal Shelter occupants and write their bios in hopes of finding good homes for them.

Our longtime tipster Judi Brown got to meet this baby girl Penny, a 3-month-old, 27-pound Australian Kelpie/Shepherd mix. She and a sibling came in together on Oct. 19.
Judi says that Penny is "timid and skittish. Eventually I gained her trust, and she did come to me. She even put her paws on my lap and gave me kisses. I knew she wanted to make friends. She will need a slow introduction, but it will pay off. She might even give you some kisses. She is playful and frolicked around the yard. She walks OK on a leash. ... She would be perfect for a family with young children so she could grow up with them. With winter coming, she would love to cuddle up on the couch or at your feet during family time."
To ask about her, cite her shelter ID #57113524 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].
Volunteer bio-writer Jamie Dotson provided the info on Stewie, this year-old, neutered American Pitbull Terrier
Mix. The 55-pound pup came in as a stray on Oct. 22.
Jamie writes, " Stewie is such a handsome boy with beautiful brown eyes, and a loving smile you just can’t resist. He loves to romp through the shelter yard and had a lot of fun going up and down the stair platform. He enjoyed standing on the top and taking in all the smells and sunshine. He walks well on a leash, takes treats gently and knows the sit command. Stewie loves to be petted, loved on and will give you kisses. ... He loves to chase balls but does not bring them back. He is a very happy and loving boy that has a tail that constantly is wagging."
Stewie's ID is #56933824. Cite the # when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].

Among the cats and kittens you'll find #57087321, known as "Kristofferson." He's a 2-month-old American Shorthair Mix. His ID is #57087321. [If you were to adopt him and a female, you could name her Bobby McGee and complete the tribute to the famed singer/songwriter.
CONTEMPLATIONS
Getting personal in October...
Over the weekend, on the 27th, I contemplated the 20th anniversary of the date that I and about 100 other employees got the heave-ho from The Formerly Big Paper Downtown.
Not a day passes that I don't miss being in a newsroom. Right now I'm typing this in my home office with a selection of dogs and cats from my staff. But, you know what? They're not as chatty and not as intriguing as the newspaper news-gatherers were in the newsrooms I enjoyed from 1965 through 10-27-04.. ... At lot of The Unloaded have thrived and done well --- some have gone on to that Big Newsroom in the Sky.
The world has changed -- more people read a paper online than on paper, I'm led to believe by experts in the field. Heck, I read two papers a day -- both online. ... Our dogs are house-trained -- no need for newspapers these days. Relax, I'm kidding the industry.
Would I say anything mean about the team of clever executives who carved a bunch of loyal-to-the-legendary paper staffers off the payroll in one fell swoop? No need. They have mirrors and we know what they see. Relax, it's a joke. Not sure they cast a reflection on a mirror. [Another gagline, honest!] My offer of $500 cash for the whole newspaper shebang still stands. i don't hear my phone ringing. The dogs are loud snorers. Sounds kind of like a newsroom. I'm kidding. My dogs have never been taught to bark expletives. Relax. It's a joke about the room I still love. I'd post a photo, but the ol' pictures are in a storage box in the garage. Yeah, I'll clean 'em out someday. Just like I'll clean the cobwebs out of my brain someday.
