EDITION OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2024 [PetPowellPress] The cats, dogs and probable humans at our house have become quite comfortable with the change in the weather. And this concludes my opening paragraph for Friday; we'll address more Earth life in Contemplations.
LOOKING FOR A GOOD DOG
OR A GOOD CAT OR A WAY
TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR GOOD HEART?
Our pal Karen Lee, the great animal advocate of barkleyworld.com and fabulous photographer of nature in New Mexico, took a look at a note from Trinity GAP Rescue and sent the note about this dog to us.
We've written about Trinity GAP Rescue for a long time -- ever since it was launched years ago as a project by teachers and members of the Girls Awareness Program at Euless Trinity High School.
Now, Trinity GAP Rescue is a big success.
The note Debra sent us had to do with this dog Prairie. Someone had visited Trinity in boarding and declared that the dog is not thriving in the "cage" while waiting for a loving human.
The writer reported, "Prairie needs a foster home who makes her feel loved, who takes her for a walk or a car ride, who teaches her to be a family dog, who gets her ready for a new home.
"Please help us to find Prairie a foster home. She is very friendly!! She needs a chance. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected] or SHARE this post with all your friends." You can also email Gap Rescue at steffenie gaprescue @gmail.com.
Prairie is listed as a 2 year old terrier mix and, her bio says, "She loves to go for car rides and enjoys playing with her toys. Prairie has beautiful eyes and a big smile and most people fall in love with her sweet personality when they meet her She is both kennel and potty trained.'
You can see more about her and many other adorable dogs at this link.
And, yes, when you click on "dogs" you'll also see many available cats, including this handsome fellow, Tails, who is #23560 -- his bio says he's "currently in a foster home for extra attention and TLC. For inquiries regarding Tails please send a text to 940-923-2304 and/or 903-452-6628 . He's said to be "a little shy and will hide at first" but he comes out of that with a little loving human input. Read the whole bio on the Trinity GAP Rescue website HERE: https://trinitygaprescue.org/our-pets/ .
MEANWHILE, IN NORTHEAST TEXAS,
A HORROR STORY ABOUT DOGS...
I got the note about this because it was a front-page story in Friday morning's edition of The Texarkana Gazette. (I'm a reader of the ol' hometown paper that gave me my start n journalism.)
The big headline on a story in a. town just west of Texarkana, was this: "Simms, Texas, man arrested on 12 counts of animal cruelty charges." And the follow read, "Suspect has been picking up dogs and allegedly shooting them."
Reporter/writer Lory Dunn's story said the guy was accused of killing "four of the dogs during fits of rage when arguing with his girlfriend."
How'd he get dogs? The story says he picked 'em up while "they were running loose around Simms or by adopting them through social media posts." (Here's the LINK TO THE STORY.
[LARRY ASIDE: May the good people at the Texas Humane Legislation Network work on increasing the punishment for people who violate the state's Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals Law. And any other laws that have to do with cruelty to animals and kids and other humans.]
P.S. Thanks to The Texarkana Gazette for giving such behavior a front-page position. If readers know about such things, they can write their elected officials and propose/support tougher laws in a state that is said to love its animals.
CONTEMPLATIONS
BIG TEX, OUTER SPACE & STUFF
Hey, Big Tex, have a great final weekend of the State Fair of Texas 2024. Larry photo explanation: Snapped that shot on the warmish morning
approaching noon last Sunday.
*Moving along: In the opening paragraph for this edition I used this phrasing : "The cats, dogs and probable* humans at our house." Here's the deal: I use the term "probable humans" because there are just two of us -- Martha's an Angel and I've never fully traced my family origin. OK, OK, I'm just kidding the spirits of my parents. Though I think that sometimes they looked at me as if I might have been born on another planet and dropped off by a fake mailman one autumn day.
What is the subject in this photo on the right? Ah, I'll focus on explaining it. I took the photo last Sunday on our annual tour of the State Fair of Texas (I'm already looking forward to the 2025 Fair and the lower prices on the new cars in the big show! Hah.) Back to the photograph:
Yes, that is a genuine piece of 21st Century Art. It is titled, aptly, "POCKET PICTURE: 2024 STATE FAIR OF TEXAS."
Some of the world's greatest photos were taken by accident. Not that the "blank" image is a great one.
I must have napped that photo as I was trying to wrestle my phone out of my pocket.
You just never know what's going to get the camera's attention at the State Fair. If I had room here, I'd post a photo of some of the entries in the canned foods competition. I might give that a shot. Hang on.
Along the same line, readlarrypowell.com is still trying to get the photo system and the prose system to play nicely as it did for nearly two decades but has failed to do so over the past few weeks. Wish us luck.....
