EDITION OF THURSDAY, OCT. 17, 2024 [PetPowellPress] I went outside with the dogs at midmorning Wednesday. The vote was unanimous. Go back inside. Apparently, we're done with walking out into cold snaps.
We want to go on record: Our Metrosprawl staffers don't blame Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for the cold snap. Petty sure he doesn't run the weather.
OK, we're opening the mailbox. Here goes.
AMONG THE MANY
WAITING IN DALLAS
We got this note from our longtime animalfan & tipster Laura Macias whose note about these dogs begins "These are some of the most
urgent needing placement..." [LARRY ASIDE: The clock may have been working against them, as is so often the case in the Dallas Animal Services Shelter, Sometimes the clock doesn't work against animals as fatally as their humans work against them. Dang it.]

We don't know their stories, but we don't want them to end life in a "city shelter" in a town that's so big it can draw the World Cup but can't convince so many of its residents to take care of their own animals. People surely know they should keep dogs and cats safe from the needle that's designed to control the population with a fatal injection. For crying out loud.
IN THE MEANTIME,
A MUNCHKIN & A DARLA
Here are a couple of animals in the Mesquite Animal Shelter, a facility with a hard-working system designed to find safe places for animals to go.
One of our reliable Mesquite tipsters, Judi Brown, the volunteer dog-biographer, sent the story of Munchkin. It begins, "If Munchkin could talk, he would ask what he was doing at a noisy shelter at this stage in his life. Because of his age he is RESCUE ONLY. Munchkin is an 8+ year-old Chihuahua/possibly Chiweenie that only weighs 17 pounds and came to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 10/10 as a stray.
'He might be confused, but I am, also," Judi wrote, then added, "Munchkin is well mannered, gentle, and very deserving. I don’t understand why his owners have not come for him. He does have hair loss down his back and his tail. It looks like it’s possibly flea related. He’s been given Nexgard. I gave him a medicated bath. I can’t say he enjoyed it, but I can say he followed me around after the bath. I think he knew he was feeling better. ... He’s cautiously friendly, does come to you and appears to like having his ears scratched. I think he would make a wonderful lapdog."
Munchkin's shelter ID is #57055112 --cite it when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected] .
Same system for these other Mesquite animals.
Dog biographer Debra Chisholm provided the story of Darla (Shelter ID # 56648758).
Debra's bio of this dog begins, "From a committed volunteer who has spent time with Darla....Oh, sweet cast-aside girl. Darla is another dog who will probably have a hard time making it out of the shelter. Her jaw is a little deformed, she’s having a hard time in the kennel, she doesn’t show that well, BUT for those looking with the heart, Darla is soooo
special! Just look at her markings! Can you see the half Micky Mouse on her back?
"Can you see her jumping into your lap? 💕💕 Help give Darla a chance! Darla is a 4 to 5-year-old, 40-pound Fox Terrier/Rat Terrier mix who came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 8/27 as a stray. Find out more information about Darla by clicking HERE .
CONTEMPLATIONS
BRAINPOWER AT MIDWEEK
Yes, you guessed: Only the canine and feline staff at readlarrypowell.com has any brainpower as this is being typed. I'm simply craving chocolate and will fight back the desire.
OK, CONSIDER THIS CONTEMPLATION: Did you see the story about the guy in Florida who was charged with animal cruelty because, as Hurricane Milton was arriving, he chained his dog at unprotected area on a highway in the storm's path. I thought, "What a creep!" and then I remembered (as I hope you have) how many people in Texas happily chain their dogs outside in all kinds of weather -- from 100-plus to thunderstorms and wintry weather. Sometimes I think the term "felony" gets about as much attention in their lives as "Be Kind To Animals" gets. Here's the link to that story about the Florida dog. ...
We'll see if anyone can figure out the venue in this item. Would you pay $10 for a corny dog?
