EDITION OF MONDAY, NOV. 11, 2024 [PetPowellPress] We'll begin this week with a grateful nod to Veterans Day (Nov. 11 since 1954 when President Eisenhower changed the name of Armistice Day to honor all veterans.
It had first been celebrated in 1921 as Armistice Day in honor of the end of World War I.
We'll get back to that in Contemplations.
In the meantime, we'll address our mission of helping the right animals find the right people.
MEANWHILE, IN DALLAS,
SOME SHELTER CUTIES
Tons of dogs and cats are available for adoption via the City of Dallas' shelter. You can reach the Dallas Animal Services & Adoption Center by clicking on this bedallas90.org LINK.
Just for the slight joy of things in the middle of that Dallas Cowboys game Sunday, I looked at the little ol' kittens available in Dallas.
Thus, if you go to the city's shelter link and navigate to cats you'll be able to see photogenic Ginger (#A1226968) as she poses.
Or you might see the seasonally named boycat, #A1226972, known as Nutmeg.
Ginger is 3 months old, weighs 2 pounds and you can adopt her without a fee. Nutmeg is 3 months old, weighs 2 pounds and can be adopted without paying a fee. Both of the beauts are in foster care. Use their IDs when you speak to someone at the shelter about adopting the kittens. Nutmeg -- just in time to remind people of the Christmas spice.
MORE DOGS AND BIG EARS
WAITING IN MESQUITE
Are there some Earhounds in this bunch?
Ah, here we go with some German Shepherd dogs who have found themselves being biographed and adored by the volunteer dog writers. [LARRY ASIDE: Pretty sure "biographed" is not an authentic verb, but, what the heck. You get the point.]
Volunteer dog-writer Jamie Dotson sent the bio of this guy Liam. He's described in his bio as a "year-old German Shepherd who weighs 61 pounds." Came in as a stray on Nov. 3.
Jamie writes, "Liam is such a gentle, loving soul that has a constant tail wag and smile. He enjoys running through the yard when you throw a ball, but he does not retrieve them. He is so happy he will run in circles to show his happiness. I feel he was someone's companion, yet they have not come to reclaim him. ... He loves to be petted and loved on, takes treats gently and walks pretty well on a leash.... Liam is such a charmer, and I know will capture your heart as he has mine. Come spend some time with him." [LIAM IS #57207270 -- cite his shelter ID when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].]
VETERAN VOLUNTEER DOG-WRITER Debra Chisholm reports, "I named this handsome fellow Spirit because he's
definitely a free spirit. He was brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/4 as a stray. Spirit is approx 2 years old and weighs 65 pounds. Though listed as a Husky, when checking with my Dog Scanner app I note that he is listed as having Akita and Korean Jindo Dog in his breed mix with perhaps some Canaan Dog thrown in for good measure.
"Spirit is a spunky high energy dog that can be a bit restless. It was raining outside so I brought him in inside to do his eval. He made it clear by whining and pacing that he did not like the confined space so i took him back outside where he was more cooperative. Spirit walks well on a leash. He may be house trained as he did his business outside. ... He is friendly and has a pleasant nature. Spirit is ok with being petted but he is a fellow who has places to go, people to see and things to do so you have to catch him between all those activities to give him some loving." [CITE SPIRIT'S ID 57211694 when you call or email the shelter.]
Same system for Vinny (#57209881) another of Jamie Dotson's bio-boys.
He's a year-old German Shepherd. Weighs 73 pounds. Came into the shelter as a stray on Nov. 4. Jamie writes, "Such a handsome boy, and I feel he was someone's loving companion, yet they have not come to reclaim him."
See these dogs, more dogs and a whole bunch of cats by visiting the Mesquite Shelter's website at THIS LINK.

SOME HISTORY AND A DAD
If you were awake in a world history class or an American history class, you probably remember the connection of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. As the history books say, it can be traced to the 11th hour and the 11th minute on November 11 in 1918 -- the time and day the participants quit fighting World War I. The armistice of The War To End All Wars. And now it's Veterans Day -- you may have noticed there's been a few other wars since 1918.
Bless all the veterans of every branch of the military and the people who love them. That's a photo of my ol' Pop John Calvin Powell when he was getting ready to be sent to Europe to be among the people standing between the bad guys and the good guys. That kid went ashore at Normandy. It left an impression on his mind and heart. He was such a kid. So many of 'em were. So many of 'em still are in our more modern conflicts. Bless 'em all.
You know that recent election campaign? We got to enjoy it because veterans have served the nation and its patriotic theme.
So, before we shut down the computer and go get more coffee, let's just say that Readlarrypowell/com has been celebrating the mission of a free press since the mid-1960s.
Our theory is that when practiced properly, the fair and impartial and vigilant free press is the best friend residents of a democratic republic can have. Bless the veterans who have preserved that free press for us -- preserved it just in case we might need it.
