HAPPY THANKSGIVING and any other holiday you're preparing to celebrate.
The Senior Staff at readlarrypowell.com now hands the keyboard over to this handsome gentleman dog, the wander-up Border Collie mix known as Dudley the Angel. Dudley, please proceed:
Happy Thanksgiving, Dear Readers, I am Dudley and what I adore most about this holiday is a thing called 'leftovers' and the number of people sitting who ignore the rule, 'Don't feed the dog!' You people are angels.
As am I, Dudley The Angel, named in honor of my calm gentle moods and both the Cary Grant character in the 1947 film The Bishop's Wife and the character portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 1997 remake, The Preacher's Wife. That makes us quite a trio of handsome fellow's with angelic tendencies, don't you think.
Moving along, for this long and enjoyable weekend, we're combining editions. First, as if we were breaking news, here is this bulletin: City shelters and rescue groups are loaded with dogs and cats in need of good, reliable, enduring homes with loving people who live up to the "I'll love you forever" pledge. And, as I learned when. was a puppy, some people just shouldn't have dogs and cats. That concludes my Dudley The Angels Public Service Announcement.
From that point we segue into a photograph showing the benefits of having dogs and cats around the house. That photo was taken by our namesake co-founder of readlarrypowell.com. Senior Office Cat William Powell had nudged him awake and cat-whispered "TAKE A PICTURE, MISTER ALERT!" [DUDLEY ASIDE: William knows how to whisper lovingly or my name isn't Dudley the Angel. I think he learned how to whisper from the other co-founder of the website, Martha Mews Powell. Parson me -- I have misspelled Martha's maiden name. It's Martha Muse.]
That photo shows the back of William's cute noggin. The young cat he mentored through kitten hood is in his traditional snoozing position on the arm of the couch. That's Stevie Ray Treeboy. The dog whose face you can see is one of Martha's personal rescues, Wendy Louise Wagstaff Arden. And the dog on the end of the couch is Porche Noel (found on the porch at Christmas) in her traditional napping position. [TAKE THIS PHOTO AS A BIG HINT to send photos of your slumbering critters and the stories of their lives to [email protected] so we can show them off in our long-running weekend feature Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap.]
Back to that photo: They all share the couch. A human hasn't sat on it for years, except to pill a dog or cat.
I do recall however, that we did once catch Larry the Typer asleep on his back with his hands clasped behind his head. Stevie Ray jumped from the floor right into the lower breadbasket. There might have been a scream and words foreign to us.
This dog peeking around the corner of the laptop is Wendy with an up-close reminder that it's almost time for the human's Thanksgiving transit to our family gathering.
And from my big canine heart and on behalf of the felines, too, may all of you humans and your animal pals keep happy memories of this Thanksgiving 2024 and travel happily through the rest of this holiday-filled year right on into a wonderfully peaceful 2025. Good grief! How quickly can a human year travel!!!
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Holidays, Happy New Tear and Happy Smiles when you stand on the scales!
