EDITION OF THURSDAY/FRIDAY NOVEMBER 21-22, 2024 [PetPowellPress] How difficult is it on a Thursday to come up with an opening sentence on a cold day in the vibrant Metroplex in Texas? I'll let you know if I come up with one. In the meantime, here's some other reports and we'll finish with Contemplations.
SOMETIMES PUPS ARE HAPPY;
SOMETIMES THEY JUST WAIT.....
This dog is Gus and he's in the Everman Animal Shelter, the latest note about him reports.
We got the tip from Everman shelter watcher and animal advocate Heather Harrison. It reads:
"Gus is a 1yr old, male Pitbull mix. He is a sweet guy. In dire need of medical attention!
"Sadly his entire body is covered in mange. (skin scrap not done). He is completely hairless & starting to crust over. Despite his terrible skin condition & pain, he is still a sweet, happy guy. Loves everyone he meets.
"Could you save this boys life?? He would forever be grateful.... and less itchy!"
Heather's note reports that the Everman Shelter does not provide vetting aside from initial vaccines. (DAPP, Bordetella & deworm)... 30 day spay/neuter contract signed upon adoption. "
To ask about saving this boy Gus, call the shelter at 817-561-5495 or email [email protected].

HOW ABOUT THAT QUILT!
TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE!
The Friends of the Animals atCedar Creek Lake have this specially designed and created quilt that they're giving away. We first mentioned back in the summer, thanks to a tip from the Friends' founder/mainstay Sydney Busch.
You may recall that this quilt, like others before it, was created and "quilted" by members of the Gun Barrel Quilters Guild to be auctioned on behalf of the Friends of the Animals Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic -- it is the world's most successful spay/neuter clinic in Gun Barrel City, Texas.
You can still buy tickets for the drawing at 10 a.m. Tuesday the 26th.
Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20.
Sydney writes, "You can call/text/email me with your credit/debit card and I'll make sure your tickets are in the pot!" Email [email protected]. Text her at 214-808-4701. Call her at 903-451-4701.

MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE,
APRICOT & FLEMING....
[LARRY ASIDE: When I typed "Apricot & Fleming" I thought it sounded like a novel about a James Bond character and the creator of 007, Ian Fleming. Sometimes my mind wanders without profit.]
Now, we've got a couple of bios from the folks who work hard as volunteers to create biographies for these adorable adoptables in the Mesquite Animal Shelter.
And the first dog Apricot is a mommy. Read on: Our veteran tipster/biographer Judi Brown tells us about these dogs.
She writes, "This sweet girl is named 'Apricot' because of her color and because she’s as sweet as an apricot. She’s also recently had puppies that are at the shelter. We’re calling them the three musketeers. They are approximately six months old and were brought in by one of our officers along with Apricot on 11/14. They are up for adoption also. They are all black… go figure? Apricot is a 2-year-old, 60-pound American terrier pit/American Staffordshire pit mix. You can tell from the concrete calluses on her elbows and on her rear that she has been mostly an outside dog. ... She’s a total loving cuddle bug! She’s very sweet, gentle, calm, friendly, and affectionate. She sits for treats and takes them gently. She stays close looking up at you with her beautiful eyes. ..." See the complete bio of these animals at the Mesquite Shelter LINK HERE. Apricot is #57276500 -- cite that number when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected].
And Judi also wrote that "Apricot told me she likes to watch sports, but she’s kind of discouraged about how the Cowboys are doing this year. But she will watch them again with you next season."
[LARRY ASIDE: In all the years I've been publishing readlarrypowelldotcom, this is the first dog who ever was cite for her loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys. Bless her good dog's heart and give her a better season next year!]
Now, Judi also provided the biography for Fleming (#57285683) -- same system for getting in touch with the shelter to ask about this dog with the strikingly beautiful eyes. Judy says Fleming is a "4-year-old, big-eyed spunky fun-loving boy looking for someone to play with (loves fetch!)..."
Judi writes, "Do you like to have fun? Do you need practice with your throwing arm? If you answered yes to either of these questions Fleming is a dog for you! He loves to have fun, and he loves to play fetch. If you don’t play with him, he’ll grab a toy and entertain himself. Fleming is a 4-year-old mixed breed that weighs 43 pounds and arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 11/15 as a stray. He’s a good boy with lots of spunk. At the same time, he is well mannered. ... When he wasn’t playing he did stay close to me. When I sat down, he came to me to be petted. He’s spirited, outgoing, playful, happy and friendly,. He wagged his tail constantly." Go to the Shelter's website HERE to read the rest of Fleming's bio. Judi says he's a calm dog. "His dream would be too sprawl out on the couch next to YOU! He promises not to disturb you while you’re watching television or reading a book."
And, when you click on the shelter's link HERE you can find many more available dogs and a fantastic collection of cats and kittens, too. These are three available adoptables you'll see.
A NOTE FROM SFCA
ABOUT VOLUNTEERS
Tawana Couch has been flying Dallas-area animals to safety for decades and she'll note that it's a team effort. In
fact, in the email, we got a note from her and the Society For Companion Animals that reads: "At this time, SFCA needs volunteers willing to travel to surrounding animal shelters, in the city and rural locations, where we have pre-arranged rescues. Usually the pickup date/times are flexible. Having a truck or large van would be most beneficial.
"Volunteers to assist moving heavy crates with dogs at DFW airport, at early, pre-dawn times are also needed, usually on Thursdays and Fridays. If you would like to join our On-Call list, contact Tawana at [email protected]."
The message also included this capsule: "Last week SFCA flew out 27 dogs from Texas to East Coast states, where dogs will find their forever homes." [LARRY NOTE: Sorry about that blurry logo -- we're still coping with photo reproduction problems at readlarrypowell.com. I may have to hire someone with a good spell to defeat the bad spell. Cue the spooky music.]
CONTEMPLATIONS
DEDICATED TO STRAY THOUGHTS
Nope, this has nothing to do with stray animals. I'm just having a morning of unlikely thoughts without purpose. For example, I've been a vegetarian for decades and every now and then I think, "Where would I go first if I ever backslid." Steakhouse? No. Burger joint? No. I'd go to an ice cream shop and get a three dip vanilla cone that would divert my thoughts until I could regain control of my mind and my appetite. My needs are simple. Hail ice cream. I'm a vegetarian. Not sure if vegans eat ice cream. ...
Nobody buys the idea that eating ice cream encourages me to exercise. Hah. Nothing except guilt inspires me to exercise. There's a lot of guilty in a three-dip ice cream cone. ...
FYI: I kind of miss the State Fair of Texas as I'm writing this. I didn't get enough of the 2024 State Fair -- I'm one of those guys who likes to walk into the Creative Arts Building and stare at the fascinating collections and artwork and recognize the fact that people love participating in the many contests. ...
If you run across it in a book store, pick up a copy of former State Fair marketing executive Nancy Wiley's informative and fascinating book The Great State Fair of Texas: An Illustrated History. Published in 1985. I've got a copy from that year -- and now and then I'll spot one in a used book store and grab it. This photo is of a copy I found in 2022 at a Half Price Book Store in the metrosprawl.
Not that I'm a complete goofball, but I still have trouble coping with the idea that 1985 was in the previous century. I also can't believe I was born in the previous century. It seems so "yesterday." And, seriously, my fellow Boomers, are you really "yesterday"?
