EDITION OF THURSDAY/FRIDAY JAN. 23-24, '25 [PetPowellPress] I saw that calendar quirk and I thought "Perfect time to use it in the dateline." So, there you have it on 23 headed to 24 in 25. No idea what that lineup means to the stargazers, crystal ball readers or Dallas Cowboys fans. Could mean the next head coach wore one of those three numbers when he played for the Cowboys. Might not. "If the Cowboys had any mystical powers they'd have more Super Bowl trophies," typed the mystic known as The Not Quite Aligned Clairvoyant.
MEANWHILE, AT THE SPCA,
WE DISCOVER A 'DAIRY'
Got the press release Thursday about the SPCA's new Board Chair Whitney Eichinger and new board members, etc., and immediately I wondered about the inventory of animals available for adoption.
So, moving swiftly along from people to pups, we decided to see what we could find in the SPCA's available adorables and, yep, we found a "first" waiting for a home on the spca.org website!
This is the first dog we've ever encountered with the name "Dairy."
She's a smilin' 2-year-old, 41-pound mixed-breed girl. The bio explained she was named Dairy "after the creamy delight; my personality is just as sweet and comforting." And, she's described as a "mellow soul" who'd be a "loyal friend, an adorable companion and a curious explorere." She's at the SPCA at 2400 Lonestar Drive, just west of downtown Dallas on the northern edge of I-30. Go to her link and you can get more details and make an appointment to meet her -- here's that link to Dairy.
When we looked at the cats on the shelter's website, we discovered a really relaxed kitten waiting for a home. His name is Eddie and his bio says he's 2 months old and weighs 2 pounds and the bio includes this passage: "I adore playtime, whether it's chasing toys or frolicking with my furry pals, but my real specialty is snuggling. I love sitting on laps and even perching on shoulders-I'm basically a professional cuddle companion. With me around, you'll never lack love or laughter!" Yep, Eddie The Cat -- sounds like the title of a book.
IN THE MEANTIME, BROTHERS
WAIT IN THE MESQUITE SHELTER
[LARRY ASIDE: Bless those folks at Mesquite Animal Services for making sure the brothers Maxwell and Paws get special notice. ]
Our tipster in the tale of the brothers is veteran volunteer dog-bio writer Debra Chisholm.
She opened with, "Let me introduce you to the cutest and sweetest little pup I have named Maxwell. He and his brother Paws were picked up by one of our officers as strays on 1/14 and brought to the Mesquite Animal Shelter."
Each boy is about 3 months old and weighs 20 pounds. The Maxwell bio reports, "He is in constant motion, very sociable and wants to be your new best friend! This cutie pie is frisky and perky and has all the typical puppy energy and enthusiasm. He does not walk on a leash and probably never has been on one. Nor does he seem interested in toys or balls. His obsession is treats, specifically Pupperoni. Though he does not seem to know the sit command, he did get the idea to do so in order to be awarded more treats. ...
I feel he would be easy to train because of being treat motivated. ... Maxwell appears to have been very well cared for and yet no one has come to reclaim him or his brother. He has no issues with being timid or shy, instead he is confident and has an enthusiastic personality."
Maxwell is #57643472 at the shelter.
Paws is #57643478.
[LARRY ASIDE: They do, indeed, look like brothers that might pal around together while stray or while climbing onto a living room couch together to watch something on TV with the family....]
Debra referred to Paws as "This Precious Pooch," and, reports, "He has all the normal energy and enthusiasm of a young pup! There is nothing timid or fearful about this little guy. He is one exuberant, tail-wagging youngster that would love to find his forever home sooner than later! He was obsessed with receiving treats, and would sometimes sit for them, even
without being instructed. With his love for treats, he should be quite easy to train with some yummy treats. He is friendly and A-OK with receiving loving attention. He stayed close but I’m suspicious that he did so simply because he wanted more treats from me!
"Paws seems to have been well cared for and yet over a week has gone by and his owner has not come looking for him. He does not know how to walk on a leash and I assume he has never been trained to do so. He was not interested in toys or balls, but he possibly has not been given toys to play with. He needs a person or family willing to give him daily playtime, exercise, and enrichment and work through all the necessary puppy stage stuff in order to fit in with his people best."
To ask about these brother pups, cite their ID numbers when you call the shelter at 927-216-6283 or email [email protected]. See more Mesquite animals -- dogs and cats --- at THIS SHELTER LINK. That 3-month-old guy Frankie is still waiting for a home.
CONTEMPLATIONS
OBSERVING THINGS IN THE WORLD...
First, I hope those pups Maxwell and Paws get a chance to live life in the same loving home. There a real special link sometimes between sibling dogs. I had two brothers, you know -- Heck, I guess, maybe, I'm always going to be ape over dogs. It's been decades since the last time I had just one dog at a time in my life. Or just one cat, too. My partner in holy mackerel!!!matrimony, Martha, is a fan of dogs and cats, too. Easier to put up with them than with me and my moods, I confess. Even I can't stand me much of the time, so I go hug a cat or a dog and refocus. And listen to them complain about me waking them. ....
Saw a story in The Formerly Big Paper Downtown that the newly approved Dallas City Manager Kim Tolbert will get $450,000-a-year salary to wrangle that challenge! As a newspaper editor and columnist I watched that town for decades -- $450,000 or even $4.5 million a year isn't enough to deal with Dallas. Heck, you have to sit in those long, long meetings that feel like a rush-hour rain to Nowheresville. ...
Dear City Manager of Dallas, Can you do anything about the lousy traffic? I've already asked the mayor. .... (That was a fictional note to Big D. Only way to do anything about the Dallas traffic is to ... wait, I had an idea for a second, but I'll hold off and give City Hall a chance to fix things.
