EDITION OF MONDAY/TUESDAY FEB. 3-4, 2025 [PetPowellPress] "Donuts on my mind" sounds like part of a Willie Nelson song, doesn't it? Well, moving along: Ah, the first Monday of February arrives and the Dallas Mavericks finally figure out a way to get the big sports headlines on a Monday morning. Swap the fan favorite to Los Angeles.
And that concludes my understanding of professional basketball. We move on to a triumph in the animal world.
'FAVE' FREYA BEATS THE CLOCK
IN HARRIS COUNTY SHELTER....
We got the news in an email from Teresa Bowman who'd been our tipster in the case of Freya, described as the "Shelter Favorite" at the Harris County Pets Resource Center.
Freya, with some solvable medical issues and a need for a home or safe haven, was facing a Monday deadline. Mercifully, Teresa sent the news early Monday that the dog who'd been dodging the time-clock for a while, was saved by Freedom Street Rescue in Houston.
If you have a spot for Freya in your life, those are the people to contact.
[THE LIFE-SAVING RESCUE OF FREYA was a genuine team effort. You can contact Teresa and the Harris County Pets Resource center HERE and see the available adorables, too. The phone is 281-999-3191 and the address is 612 Casino Rd., Houston, Texas 77076.]
MEANWHILE, PLANNING
AHEAD WITH FRIENDS....
Yes, the new year rolls on and the Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake keep rolling on, too. In this case, mark your calendar for 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, when the friends conduct their periodic Low-cost vaccinations, heartworm-testing, microchipping & "more" clinic.
This is scheduled at the Friends of the Animals Clinic in Gun Barrel City -- the clinic is traditionally the site where the Friends operate (so to speak) the world's most successful spay/neuter clinic at Gun Barrel City, Texas.
The "shots and testing clinic" is an important portion of the mission of the Friends's -- the Friends work to keep animals healthy and also work to keep animals from presenting the area with more unwanted litters of dogs and cats.
Got questions, contact Sydney and the Friends at [email protected] or call 903-451-4701 or 214-808-4701.
So, there you have it, a Friends Clinic that helps animals and also helps there people help animals.
MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE:
BEAUTIFUL EYES AND A CAT'S FUR
Mesquite Animal Shelter volunteer dog-biographer Judi Brown provided us with these two dogs and a quick search got us to the fantastic cat in the shelter's "availables" listings.
We begin with Judi's approach regarding the dog Dixon, a fellow with eyes of different colors. Judi writes, "You’re in for a treat when you meet this golden Portuguese Podengo/Carolina Dog. I was taken in with his charming somewhat goofy personality. He’s a 10-months-old, 50-pound sweet boy that was surrendered to the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/30 through no fault of his own. His owners had found him when he was just a small fluffy cute puppy. They kept him for 9 months and when he got to be a full grown dog, they no longer had time for him. They didn’t say this, but I’m going to assume that apparently 'he was too much trouble'. Well their loss is your gain.
"Dixon is delightful! The surrender form stated he was an indoor dog raised with children and was good with them. I saw him when he came in and he was absolutely terrified. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised when he gave me a friendly greeting when I met him in his kennel. His ribs are showing so he could use some groceries. ... He’s already fixed so he’s ready to leave with you. Just the facts please: the Portuguese Podengo is the national dog of Portugal. They are working dogs and known to be very loyal. Dixon wants to be an inside dog so he can enjoy quality time with his new family."
Dixon is #57760662 -- cite his ID when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected]. Same connection points for this guy Zoolander (#57715040), another dog on Judi's list of adorable adoptables at Mesquite.
Judi writes, "Zoolander could win a contest for being an outstandingly attractive dog. His soft cream coloring, hazel eyes and big stand-up ears make him a stand out! He could also win a personality contest. He’s a 1-year-old, 45-pound Canaan/Alaskan Husky dog that arrived at the Mesquite Animal Shelter on 1/24 as a stray. He is already fixed!
"I was met in his kennel with tail wags indicating he’s a happy boy. When he got out in the yard, he investigated the yard thoroughly. He knows the sit command and takes treats gently. He then found a ball and brought it to me. He loved playing fetch. He didn’t want to stop. He stayed close. He seeks affection. He’s sweet, gentle, and cautiously friendly. He met the other dogs in the bay with tail wags. He jumped back when one barked at him. He walks fine on a leash. He did his business as soon as he got out into the yard. If you know anything about huskies you know they like to run and in so doing sometimes escape. He will need a tall secure fence. He will also need to be brushed frequently."
And Judi adds, "Zoolander wants to be an inside dog mostly. The Super Bowl is coming up and he would love to watch the game with you. He promises to root for whatever team you are for!"

Among them, you'll find this cat. She is, readlarrypowell.com believes, the first Cat we've ever cited named in honor of a mustard -- she is Wasabi. (Click on the artwork and it should grow a little and be very clear. I'm still working on our photo display system. I swear on a stack of cat treats! Larry.)
CONTEMPLATIONS
ON A MONDAY IN FEBRUARY
I watched the opening portions of The Grammies broadcast and realized how lost I am in the 21st century. I usually just notice that when I'm trying to figure out whether to slap, slide or insert my debit card at the grocery store. ... I'll be glad when this bird flu thing is over. I'm missing my occasional omelet. Not as much as I miss ice cream. And I've lost the need for a spoon of peanut butter to get through the day -- does that mean I am no longer attending elementary school and I've graduated to nachos and hot sauce? ... Relax, I'm laying off the high calorie stuff. Though I have been daydreaming lately about the most wonderful invention: chocolate filled frosted donuts. Not a calorie in the recipe -- and if you believe that, catch me next fall when I do the high-kicking dances with the Radio City Rockettes in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Quick, somebody hand me a box of energy-building sugar-glazed chocolate-filled donuts.
