EDITION OF TUESDAY, FEB. 11, 2025 [PetPowellPress] Welcome to another day in the world of dogs and cats. And, every now and then, a human will appear, too.
Time out. I've got to "chuck the chin" of William Powell, my senior office cat. He never bets on football. He and I met in the summer of 2018 -- we painted the wood trim on a house together. He was more of a "wander-up advisor" who never left.
But, William Powell worked very, very hard to earn the position of Senior Office Cat. If I hadn't taken him in, who know what might have happened to him. You have to have an open mind to adore a literate cat.
IN THE MEANTIME, LOOK AROUND:
HOW MANY ANIMAL SHELTERS AND
UNWANTED ANIMALS DO YOU SEE?
How's that for a depressing headline in the Greater Metrosprawl where there are lots of shelters and animals, but not so many people eager to adopt a city's unwanted animals.
It's a puzzle people have been trying to solve around here since the first litters of unwanted puppies and kittens showed up on a front porch or in the back yard. Surprise, surprise. You had no idea Fluffy could get pregnant if you told her not to, right? [LARRY ASIDE: I'll shut up about all that now -- I'm (a) preaching to the choir and (b) the lecture is falling on ears that happily remain deaf when it comes to human responsibility for animal encountering gestation. Pinheads. Let me quickly apologize. Now, moving along. That's Blanche, the blind dog on the clock for 5 pm today in Mesquite: Cite her shelter ID #57782544 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283. Also cite the ID, Dear Rescues, when you email the shelter at [email protected].
Use it and save her life!]
We're monitoring a couple of situations with animals "on the clock" right now. We wrote about their plight for Monday's edition and we'd prefer to be writing about their rescue/success for Tuesday's edition. We'll see how things went after their shelter deadlines pass.
Remember, you may know people who'd save these animals from the needle if only they knew the animals needed saving. Pass it on.
"ALERT THE MEDIA," as they used to say. Start a groundswell of opposition to euthanasia and a tsunami of positive support for adoption of the animals threatened by taxpayer dollars that pay for the needles ad the deathjuice.. Sounds like it oughta be easy, right? Yeah, it's so easy. That's why so many rescuers and volunteers in the Greater Metrosprawl have been working so hard for decades to brighten up the brains that live in this big gasbag of so what/don't care philosophy.]
ABOUT SOME DOGS
WE SPOTLIGHTED...
The Glenn Heights Animal Shelter (it's on the southern side of Dallas and I-20) has a bunch of animals waiting -- we cited some of them in the Monday edition thanks to a report from our longtime pal Laura Macias, a determined soul who works to get animals off of death row in the small shelter.
"Not a soul" has asked about the animals, Laura told us Monday. But they are still there waiting. We'd cited Patches (left), the 11-month-old male Pointer mix who "adores belly rubs" and a pair of siblings, the Collie mixes Bert and Ernie. Just 3 months old.
The basics are call or text Laura at 214-949-2726 or email. [email protected]. Ask her how you can help.
You can also visit the shelter and the many animals waiting for either a new home or the "Needle of Stillness." The shelter is at 550 e. Bear Creek Road in Glenn Heights.
You can see more about all this at the Friends of Glenn Heights Animal Shelter's Facebook page.
TWO GREAT DANES WAITING
AT EVERMAN SHELTER.....
(AND SOME OTHERS, TOO!)
Waiting for "what" is up to people.
We got the tips on this pair from our longtime Everman Shelter monitor Heather Harrison.
The email from Heather begins "Everman TX Shelter is over capacity. They are pleading for help to save lives!
"APHRODITE (left) & TITAN came into the shelter together. Both have on harnesses, clean/healthy coats, well mannered & altered! Without a doubt they once had a family that loved them but sadly no one is coming for them.
"Aphrodite is a female Great Dane. 90lbs. Friendly & well mannered.
Titan is a male Great Dane. 100lbs. Altered. Friendly & well mannered.
"THEY WILL SOON BE ON THE EUTHANASIA LIST THIS WEEK! Both are so deserving of a home!," Heather emphasizes.
To ask about rescuing these wonderful dogs, call 817-561-5495 or email
[email protected].
[LARRY ASIDE: For many years we had a Great Dane/Lab mix I named Hambone Jack, The Canine King of The Blues. I rescued him in of Kiest Park in Dallas and he was my dog for years. Such a wonderful fellow. So, I'm posting Heather's story of Aphrodite and Titan in honor of my beloved Hammy. May these two dogs be adopted into a home that respects and loves them -- pardon me, but as I type this, I have to stop and dab the tears from my eyes. I miss Hammy. He was a real friend. I suspect these dogs will be, too.]
WAIT A MINUTE: ONE MORE PAIR IN EVERMAN -- Heather included the story of this pair. "Boomer (left) & Dexter are 9 month old GSD/Malinois mix pups. Both are incredibly sweet. They appear to be the product of either a poor breeding situation, extreme malnourishment, or never being let out of a kennel. (or all the above!) Very thin, paws are not quite right & are a bit off mentally at times. Both are incredibly sweet
& soak up every ounce of love they can get. These poor pups deserve a real chance at life after having such a horrible past."
Same contact points for these two: Heather writes, "TO RESCUE
817-561-5495 & [email protected]."
Same contact points for this dog who, Heather writes, "WANDA WILL BE EUTHANIZED TODAY DUE TO SPACE!!!
"Wanda is a 3yr old, female Pitbull mix? She was picked up as a stray & in very rough shape. She is covered head to toe with presumed mange (No skin scrape yet), severe hair loss, cracked skin & infected eyes. Although she is in pain she still happily greets everyone with a wagging tail. Everman Shelter is past capacity & she will lose her life today! Any rescues have space?"
CONTEMPLATIONS
Dear Readers, My lone contemplation for the day is "Why do so many allegedly kind and smart people manage to live lives that result in the deaths of the dogs they once said they'd love forever?" This has puzzled me for decades. Feel free, Dear Creeps, to try to explain how you felt just fine ignoring your dog as you walked away.
