EDITION OF WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY APRIL 23-24, 2025. [PetPowellPress] The moon has been beautiful lately -- you know how these things work. Walk out, look up.
If you have a dog who leads you out at the right time of the pre-dawn lack-of-sleep mood, you get some great views. That's Wendy. She's never seen the moon -- sleeps through the night. That's also her early morning "Catch me later, Dude," expression.
I discovered some interesting things while scrolling Facebook locations this morning. Birthdays, illustrations, dogs and a firehouse, etc. I'll try to recap.
And, as you know, it goes without saying that every animal shelter and every rescue group under either the sun or the moon needs homes for the animals they have waiting in ages or in foster homes. Pass it on to your kindest friends who need animals to nurture their souls.
FIRST, A BIRTHDAY
MADE FOR GIVING
One of the most admired animal rescuers in the known universe is the great Angie Manriquez, founder and
inspirational energy of the non-profit rescue Angie's Friends.
The story of this famed rescue group began in 1999 when Angie was courageously beginning her mission of saving animals in a then-rough West Dallas area of Big D. Rough? She even rescued dogs that were being used as "barking alert dogs" by drug dealers.
If I recall from previous writings, at that time Angie became so noted for her rescue work that she was being called The Fairy Dogmother of West Dallas" and, then, as her success increased and her legend grew, she became (deservedly) The Fairy Dogmother of Dallas.
Back to the birthday point: I clicked on this link to Angie's Friends info and discovered that North Texas Giving Day has a page where you can donate as part of Angies's 84th Birthday Fundraiser. Click HERE
or the Facebook site for Angie's Friends and the how-to info.
A NOTE ABOUT 'GRAVY'
FROM LITTLE ELM FIRE DEPT.....
Another accidental spotting on a Facebook page. This one is from the Little Elm Fire Department's goodhearts. Posted about a dog named 'Gravy" a few days ago HERE.
The posting reads, "Sam may be the hero you need in a crisis, but meet Gravy—he’s the hero your heart has been waiting for!
"With a few grey hairs that only add to his charm, Gravy’s love for playtime and affection keeps him feeling young at heart. He loves spending time with dogs who match his energy and is ready to brighten your world (in the best way, of course
"His sweet nature and soulful eyes make him the perfect companion for anyone looking for a little extra warmth and happiness. Gravy has been patiently waiting for the perfect family to call his own—and that family could be YOU!

AND, NOW, ARTWORK
CAUGHT OUR EYE
That's thanks to a note by our pal Maeleska Fletes, longtime rescuers/advocate and a voice on behalf the non-profit DFW's Furgotten Friends.
We'll get to Maleska's new art in a moment, First we're going to post her note about this dog Geo.
She wrote, "Look at my foster! He is so darn cute. Share your help him find his home.
"Meet Geo! This handsome little guy came to us from the City Shelter, and we’re so lucky we found him when we did. He’s part of the same litter as our sweet Gigi. While we tried to help the whole litter, the owner sadly surrendered them to the shelter. Thankfully, Geo was still there, and the rest of his siblings have found homes or rescue placements.
"Geo is a bit shy at first, but he loves other dogs and is slowly coming out of his shell. We’re working on potty training, and he’s already showing great progress for a 3-month-old puppy,
"He’s sweet, gentle, and absolutely adorable—and now he’s ready to find a forever home of his own. Could that be with you?
"Interested in meeting Geo? Fill out an adoption application and let’s get this love story started!" Here's the ADOPTION FORM LINK.
CONTEMPLATIONS
AN ART CHANGE; OTHER NOTES
Yes, that artwork captures the life of an animal rescuer, doesn't it!
And in this case, it's capturing the life of the aforementioned veteran rescuer Maeleska Fletes.
She posted it this week on her website and the computer announced "Updated her profile picture."
See the Facebook site HERE. And remember what it takes to work so determinedly for animals that you meet in the sprawling Dallas/Fort Worth Animals Are Everywhere Region. You gotta have lots of grit and determination to make sure you have enough drive to catch 'em and enough grip to hold 'em!
We hope to get an ID on the artist so other people can get a cool work of art on more websites with dogs, cats. Anybody knows, let me know at [email protected]. Thanks. Larry "Unpainted or Sketched For a Lifetime" Powell"
