EDITION OF APRIL 4-5, 2025 [PetPowellPress] Can't wait until July and August when we have the cool, green weather
of summer! I may have incorrectly remembered text from my copy of Texas Weather & Record Sweat. Well, let's move right along into the day's notes and notices. And Contemplations. Can't wait for that first cup of hot chocolate! (Perhaps I need to have my personal wheels realigned...That's my Senior Office Cat William using a yawn to fight off the urge to nod in agreement.)
TWO TRADITIONAL EVENTS:
ONE AN SPCA STRUT,
ONE A GAP WALK-A-THON
Both of these events are in April and we're going to list them in order of "Fastest Cat."
I'm kidding. It'll be in calenderical order. I'm pretty sure there's no such word as "calenderical." Moving along
Heck there may be more than two outdoor animal fund-raising events but these two showed up on the radar today. [Larry wonders: Is there a Sofa-Nap Contest for Cats? Might be a fund-raiser! Last for a couple of weeks, if all cats nap like ours.]
This morning, as I attempted to stabilize my approach to life, I clicked on two different area traditions focused on
outdoor evens with your dogs.
ON APRIL 12 in Dallas' Fair Park, the SPCA of Texas hosts its annual "Strut Your Mutt -- The race To End Animal Cruelty." And the SPCA says "Strutters can participate in the 3k fun run-walk beginning at 8 a.m. as an individual or part of a team."
And, of course, there'll be "family-friendly food, drink and entertainment," the SPCA says.
Also at The Strut, the SPCA notes, "The Bow Wow Bazaar, sponsored by VCA Animal Hospitals includes vendor booths, activities for pets and kids, demonstrations and more!"
Here's a link to registering for Strut Your Mutt.
ON APRIL 26 in Euless,
the TRINITY GAP WALK A THON is scheduled at Trinity High School, 500 N. Industrial Blvd. [LARRY ASIDE: You may recall that this rescue group, which partners with the Euless Shelter, evolved via the Girls Awareness Program at Euless High School.]
The organization urges, "Bring your dog & walk around the track!"
We've included this art that has the details. Click on it to make it grow big enough to read.

ARE THESE THE NAMES
OF 1960s-70s ROCK MUSICIANS?.
When I saw the names in the emails stacked in my inbox I immediately thought of the rock era and the British Invasion.
The names are Kane, Tico and Derek. Anybody remember Derek & The Dominoes?
Or is one of these the name of your next happily adopted dog?
Thanks to the wonderful volunteer dog biographers at Mesquite Animal Services, we can fill you in on the details of
each dog. Maybe you'll want to adopt a dog or visit them all.
Our veteran Mesquite dog bio-writing tipster Debra Chisholm provided the Kane story. She writes that the "stunningly handsome fellow" came into the Mesquite Animal Shelter as a stray on December 9, 2024. .
Debra reports, "My dog scanner app suggests his breed is primarily Appenzeller Sennenhund." He's about 2 1/2-years old, weighs 59 pounds and is neutered.
"There are so many positives about this highly adoptable fellow," Debra writes. "He walks well on a leash. He appears to be house trained. He is well behaved, calm, and gentle. He is friendly and is A-OK
with being petted and loved on. Kane has a low-key personality and a serene nature. "
He got over being "very nervous and fearful" at the shelter and now has "acclimated."
And, she says, "Kane has the most beautiful and interesting coat as well as soulful brown eyes! He is very photogenic. ... This charming boy has won my heart! It is astonishing to me that he has not been adopted or rescued. Being confined in a city shelter for nearly 4 months is not appropriate for any dog."
To ask about adopting or tagging Kane, cite his ID # 57421815 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email at [email protected].
Same system for asking about this guy Tico -- cite his ID #58074832.
Debra writes that Tico is a "delightful Bull Terrier pup" who came into the shelter as a stray after he "was picked up by the police."
She adds, "I got the impression that he really enjoyed the exciting ride in a police car, but not so much being left in a city shelter. His owners have not come looking for him, and he is open to finding a new home with people who will stay committed to him."
He's about 9 months old, neutered and weighs 29 pounds. And, Debra writes, "Is this guy ever a happy-go-lucky, fun-loving pup! He walks well on a leash. He loves treats and take them gently. Tito is sociable, amiable, and wants to make friends with you. I would guess that he has never met a stranger! There is nothing shy about Tico."
[LARRY SUGGESTION: See Tico's bio by going to the shelter website HERE. Navigate to the dogs and you'll see the fab lad.
And that brings us to Derek (#58098380). [LARRY ASIDE: Check out his qualifications as an Earhound!]
Debra says he's a Belgian Shepherd mix who was picked up as a stray by a shelter officer on March 8. Derek is about 2 and weighs 53 pounds.
And Debra writes, "Talk about a fun-loving goofy boy! He is crazy about tennis balls and toys and will keep himself entertained (and you as well) playing with them. He walks quite nicely on a leash. |
"This charming, highly adoptable fellow has plenty of energy and would love a home with a good yard in order for him to stretch his legs and burn off some energy. However, he made it perfectly plain to me that he has no interest in living outside--not in the oppressive Texas heat! He wants to be with his people, socializing, cuddling, and enjoying life with them. He does jump on you so that is a behavior that needs to be corrected. Until he learns that it is bad
manners to jump on people, he might not be a good fit for a family with small children. He is friendly, perfectly fine with being loved on and is just an all-around delightful boy! Derek
would seem best suited to a person or family who would provide daily enrichment, playtime, and exercise. He does not seem to know any commands but would undoubtedly be open to learning some. He loves treats so that may be a good inducement to learning some commands. This boy made me smile and laugh out loud with his playful antics during our photo session."
Remember, cite his ID #58098380 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email at [email protected].

CONTEMPLATIONS
SONGS, BASKETS & A MOP
Back to Derek the Dog and musicians. Anybody else remember Derek and the Dominoes? How about that song "Layla"? Anybody shouting "Eric Clapton rocks!" Sorry for the rock history-- I'm a teenager from that era and I can't stop the bop. Or whatever. ...
GOT AN EMAIL FROM THE CITY OF DALLAS that read, "Collection day is tomorrow" and right away I thought the city known for hustlin' has already organized a neighborhood door-to-door campaign to pick up money and keep the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas ...
One of the emails I got had the subject line "Can you believe a mop is our best-seller" I can believe anything in 2025. I watch the market and the Dallas Cowboys. And Twilight Zone re-runs.
