EDITION OF TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY JUNE 10-11, 2025 [PetPowell Press] This edition's story about one dog might be best described as "personal" to a whole lot of people.
Way back quite a while ago we introduced Mooney to our readership -- that was "thanks" to a heroic puppy-saving effort by one of our longtime tipsters, the devoted rescuer Kimberly Jones.
It is difficult to say Mooney's story didn't have a happy ending -- while this portion of his story has ended, the reality is he had so many supporters who loved him and there is the fact that his heart and his human Kimberly's heart bonded securely. [That's Mooney with a "running buddy" enjoying a backyard romp!]
We got the news about Mooney from that human, Kimberly. Mooney, in the grip of some deteriorating medical situations, left us just over a week ago. Too many challenges for the little guy.
The story of Mooney would have ended way earlier if not for Kimberley sighting an on-line "bargain" dog. As Kimberly explained back then, "This little puppy was being given away on Nextdoor ... I could tell he had something going on - possibly sick - and he is emaciated. I couldn't bear someone taking him for free and not getting him vet care. I picked him up [that] morning around 9:30 am and took him directly to my vet clinic..."
What did the vet find? Kimberly reported, "This little one is parvo positive and he seems to be blind and have possible neurologic issues (could have caused the blindness). I cannot turn my back on him. They are hospitalizing him now to get him started on supportive care (IV etc).” [Those are Money's first ride-to-the-vet photos; the blurry photos are a result of Larry's bad technoskills.]
As it worked out, many people felt "personal" about the little Frenchie guy Mooney.
How do we know? People rallied to help. Kimberly told us this week, "His medical costs are all taken care of. Thankfully.
He had an extended family of people who followed updates on him through his GoFundMe and they donated and sent him items he needed often. He was very loved by many people besides just me."
On Monday, Kimberly sent us a note. It read, "I said goodbye to Mooney a week ago today. ... His hydrocephalus was progressing and I think he was having more bad than good.
"I definitely did not want him to suffer," she said, and, added, "I am waiting for his ashes."
[LARRY NOTE TO DEAR READERS: You, like me and Martha, have probably gone through the "mourning" after a rescued dog leaves us way too soon even though we could see it coming. As Kimberly and I discussed this situation, she provided a description that perfectly fits the situation.]
Kimberly, a week after losing Mooney to the medical challenges, perfectly captured the emotions involved -- yes, you probably can relate to what she said.
These words capture the way the heart feels. Kimberly said, "I just miss him and I often forget he's gone and will look for him. My life revolved around him for almost a year and a half and it's weird now."
Thank you, Kimberly, for saving this dog and caring for him as he moved through life. And thank you, Mooney, for helping humans find that key portion of their heart that makes room for helping animals. That final photo? I like that one because Mooney's face says, "I'm having a great time rompin' in this life!" -- Thanks, Kimberly. for being Mooney's life-extending friend. Sincerely, Larry.]
