IN ANTICIPATION OF A SUMMER...
EDITION OF MONDAY, JUNE 2, 2025 [PetPowellPress] OK, Monday is a good time to wonder about this: Just WHEN does Summer of '25 actually start around here?
With the help of a Google search we learn that our local summertime starts at 9:42 PM CDT on Friday, June 20. Until then, temps will be in he low 30s with chances of snow and I will be dressed like a hefty reindeer.
In the meantime, we simply practice our summertime grimaces, sweatsnarls and gripes. We may have a volcano photo in our Contemplations for this edition. A Texas volcano? Read about the animals first.....
HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?
SOMEONE DUMPS DOGS!
Yes, someone dumped two dogs in Dallas and here they are.
We got the story on them from our longtime tipster, the rescuer/advocate Kimberly Jones.
She wrote, "A good Samaritan named Heather is feeding these 2 sweet dogs that were dumped. This is what she has to say about them:
'I found these two puppies that someone dumped a few weeks ago. I’m looking for a foster or permanent home for them. I’ve contacted all of the no-kill shelters and have had no luck, as they’re all full.
'Unfortunately I already have two big dogs and cannot take them. They are still outside but I’ve been feeding them everyday. It’s two girls and they appear to be in relatively good health and are both spayed. They were very very hungry when I first found them but are starting to gain weight. They’ve definitely been abused bc it took a while for them to let me pet them. I’m not sure if they are potty-trained. I have tons of pics and video for anyone interested. They’re still out there (and are) super calm and just need some love!' "

AND HERE ARE TWO MORE
DOGS 'RUNNING DOWN' A STREET
This was from noted rescuer/advocate Dorrie Mowery It was headlined "NEED FOSTER!!!"
And it reads, "Saturday 'Max and Molly' were running down the street with collars and leashes and chemical burns on various places on their bodies.
"I walked them home to our place. They had such a toxic smell, despite bathing, that we've had to keep them isolated. We couldn't get any help over the holiday as they endured constant itching, licking and whining. They are also underweight and every time I feed them the seem ravished.
"These poor babies, I can't image what they've been thru! They are so sweet and smart, only 9 mo old. I can't keep them, we need to leave town. Please help if you can!
"They need a foster or adoption family and they need to stay together. If I have to surrender them I know they will be put down with these injuries, but they appear to be healthy other than this horrible condition.
"They were taken to the vet and had no microchips. They have been reported to Dallas animal services. The vet said that their wounds look like some kind of chemical burn and they were given treatment to put on the burns."

MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE,
YEP, MORE DOGS AWAITIN'
Let's jump right into The Canine Personality Place in Texas -- the Mesquite Animal Shelter. How do we know about
the personalities? Because the volunteer bio-writin' team at the shelter gets to know the personality of the dogs they write about. Maybe that can help someone living miles away realize this dog is "worth the drive."
Our introductory dog is this guy Austin whose story is told by veteran dog bio-writer Judi Brown. She writes, "Austin is looking for an active family that will play with him. In return, he will fill your home with a joyful spirit that is contagious. In my opinion, he’s a good-looking boy with beautiful coloring and alluring brown eyes.
"Austin is a year-and-a-half old, 38-pound 'retriever Lab' mix that arrived ... on 3/27. He was brought in by one of our concerned citizens. He has a small frame. When we first met he was so excited to be out of the kennel and get attention that he jumped on me. He does get down when instructed to do so. However, the enthusiastic puppy that he is soon forgets. He could use some manners training to learn not to do this. He frolicked and galloped around the yard joyfully wagging his tail. After that he would come back and check in with me. With some coaxing he did sit for a treat and took the treat gently. He also came from across the yard when I called him. He introduced himself to other dogs wagging his tail. ..." SAME SYSTEM for this girl Roxie. We learned of her from volunteer biographer Jamie Dotson who reports that
Roxie is a 3-year-old, spayed Pittie mix who weighs 58 pounds and was an owner-surrender on May 27.
"Reason for surrender," Jamie explained, "was the family was having a medical hardship which didn't allow much time to be spent with Roxie. She has a beautiful brindle coat and does appear to have been well cared for. "She is always so happy and bubbly to everyone she meets. Always a tail wag, a big smile and wants to cuddle close to her human companion. And she will make sure you will smile, slathering you with a kiss. She has a very gentle loving personality. ... This lovely little girl would love to find her own loving home where she lives indoors where it is nice and cool, then have a secured backyard to run and play in, always returning inside. You could not ask for a better pup to add such happiness into your life."
Roxie is #56082934 at the shelter. Cite that # when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 nor email [email protected].

HERE'S HOW LUCKY WE GOT.... One of our cats won Lotto Texas two years ago and rebuilt our a/c system. I'm kidding. I've been standing out in the heat with my lawnmower and hallucinating. ...
That seasonal photo? I snapped it a few years ago when The Loop Volcano erupted between Dallas and Grand Prairie during a highway rebuilding project. ...You remember that, right? I'm kidding on a Monday. That was a sun-up photo from one day last week looking easterly over the Metrosprawl. I do recall, however, when the surf was up in Arlington....(old amusement park memory)......
